By 2028, 58% of business functions will rely on AI agents to manage at least one daily process. For most organizations, that future is already arriving. An AI consultant and EOD veteran breaks down what readiness actually looks like.

Agentic AI Isn't Coming. It's Here. Is Your Organization Ready?

A lot of the AI conversation is still written in future tense. "AI will change how we work." "Agents will eventually handle..." "In the next few years, organizations will need to..."

The future tense is wrong.

Gartner projects that by 2028, 58% of business functions will rely on AI agents to manage at least one process daily. The Agentic AI Institute reports 72% of enterprises have already deployed agentic AI in production. April 2026 marked what some analysts are calling the "enterprise tipping point," the moment when agentic adoption shifted from early experimentation to mainstream production.

This isn't a horizon problem. It's a readiness problem. The question isn't whether your organization will encounter agentic AI, it's whether you'll have the infrastructure to manage it when it arrives.

What Agentic AI Actually Is

The distinction matters. Most AI tools answer questions or generate content when you ask. Agentic AI takes action.

An agent doesn't wait for a prompt. It monitors conditions, makes decisions based on those conditions, and executes actions, routing a support ticket, synthesizing a compliance report, updating a database, sending a notification, scheduling a follow-up. It operates within a workflow autonomously, not as a response to a human request.

This is what makes agentic AI genuinely different from the chatbots and content generators most organizations are already using. The capability level is higher. So is the governance requirement.

The Five Readiness Questions

  1. Do you know where AI agents are already operating in your organization?

Most companies have more agentic activity than leadership realizes. Individual tools with autonomous workflows, automated email routing, CRM updates, customer service bots with decision logic, are agents by another name. You can't govern what you haven't inventoried.

  1. Are your processes documented well enough to be automated?

Agents execute processes. If your processes live in people's heads or in inconsistent tribal knowledge, agents will codify that inconsistency at scale. Documentation is a prerequisite, not an afterthought.

  1. Do you have defined human-in-the-loop requirements?

For every agent action that has meaningful consequences, someone needs to have decided: does this require human review before execution, or can the agent proceed autonomously? That decision doesn't happen by default. You have to make it explicitly.

  1. Who is accountable for agent performance?

Not who manages the tool, but who owns whether the agent is producing accurate, appropriate outputs aligned with business objectives. In most organizations, this accountability doesn't exist. That's the governance gap.

  1. What's your error detection and correction protocol?

Agents make mistakes. The question is whether you detect them before they compound. This requires active monitoring, not passive assumption that things are working because no one has complained.

The Readiness Baseline

Organizations that score well on all five questions are positioned to deploy agentic AI at scale and capture the operational efficiency it can generate.

Organizations that score poorly on even two or three of these questions need to build the foundation before they build the capability. Deploying agents on top of undocumented processes, with no accountability structure, and no error detection is how you get to Gartner's projected 40% failure rate.

The Insight

Readiness for agentic AI is not primarily a technical question. It's an operational and governance question.

The technology is available. The deployment is achievable. The sustainable performance, the kind that delivers value 12 months in rather than just 90 days in, requires operational infrastructure that most organizations haven't built yet.

The Takeaway

Score yourself on the five questions. Assign a yes, partial, or no to each.

Five yeses: you're ready to move aggressively on agentic deployment.
Three or four yeses: identify the two gaps and close them before expanding your agent footprint.
Two or fewer yeses: build the foundation before you build the capability. Start with process documentation and accountability assignment.

The organizations that do this work now will have a durable advantage over those that build on sand.
